Carrollton, Texas | Church Audio Consulting, System Tuning & Volunteer Training
The Challenge: More Than a Training Issue
Central Park Baptist Church in Carrollton, Texas, initially contacted Living Sound Production for professional media team training.
The church wanted its volunteers to better understand their existing sound system, operate equipment with greater confidence, and respond effectively to technical issues during worship services.
Rather than immediately offering equipment training alone, Living Sound presented two options: a focused training session using the existing system, or a comprehensive package combining system inspection, professional tuning, optimization, and hands-on media team training.
After reviewing both options, church leadership recognized that some of their challenges might extend beyond volunteer experience. Improper system settings, equipment issues, or underlying audio problems could also be affecting worship services.
The church chose the comprehensive approach—addressing the system first, then training the team to operate it effectively.
System Inspection: Identifying the Root Causes
Living Sound began with a detailed inspection of the church’s existing audio system, centered around an Allen & Heath Qu-32 digital mixing console.
Our team evaluated gain structure, input and output levels, EQ, dynamics processing, amplifier settings, and overall signal flow.
Using professional measurement microphones, pink noise, and Smaart audio analysis software, we also examined the loudspeaker system’s frequency response and operating levels. Speaker positioning, aiming, and coverage were reviewed to identify potential limitations affecting the listening environment.
The inspection revealed that the sound system had not been properly calibrated. Console gain structure and processing settings were inconsistent, while excessive EQ and filtering had been applied in attempts to control recurring microphone feedback.
These adjustments were compromising sound quality and limiting the system’s performance.
The church was not using a dedicated external system DSP, making proper configuration of the Qu-32 and its available processing particularly important.

Professional Tuning & System Optimization
Rather than continuing to compensate for problems with additional EQ and filtering, Living Sound rebuilt the system’s essential audio settings.
We re-established gain structure and operating levels, then used Smaart measurements and pink noise to guide loudspeaker calibration and EQ adjustments.
Once the main system was optimized, we worked through individual input channels and outputs, refining microphone gain, EQ, compression, limiting, reverb, and monitor send settings.
Special attention was given to the pastor’s wireless headset microphone, the podium microphone, and the choir microphones. Each was adjusted for its specific role in worship, with an emphasis on natural sound, improved clarity, and more reliable operation.
The goal was not to replace equipment unnecessarily, but to help the church achieve better performance from the system it already owned.

Hands-On Media Team Training
With the system properly configured, Living Sound brought the church’s media volunteers together at the sound booth for practical, system-specific training.
Instead of simply walking through mixer functions, we explained what had been discovered during the inspection, which settings had changed, and why those changes mattered.
The team learned how room reflections, resonances, microphone feedback, and improper gain structure could affect their mixes. By comparing previous settings with the optimized configuration, volunteers gained a clearer understanding of both the problems and their solutions.
Training covered Qu-32 console operation, channel processing, main and monitor mixes, signal routing, and the differences between pre-fader and post-fader sends.
We also discussed how to organize console layers and outputs to manage both in-person worship and livestream audio efficiently from a single mixing console.

Improving Livestream Audio with OBS
Because Central Park Baptist Church also uses OBS for livestreaming, the training extended beyond the sound console.
Living Sound reviewed the audio signal path from the Qu-32 through the video mixer and into OBS, explaining how to establish appropriate levels at each stage.
Volunteers learned how excessive software filters and unnecessary processing can negatively affect broadcast audio, along with practical ways to maintain a cleaner and more consistent signal.
We also answered questions about using ambient microphones to capture the atmosphere of worship and choosing appropriate reverb settings for both the sanctuary and online audience.
These discussions helped the team better understand how live sound and broadcast audio work together—and where each requires different attention.
The Result: Better Sound, Better Understanding
By the end of the project, Central Park Baptist Church had a more carefully calibrated and efficiently configured sound system, along with a media team better equipped to operate it.
The pastor expressed strong satisfaction with the improvement, particularly the more comfortable sound while preaching and the improved monitoring experience.
Media team members also appreciated having their long-standing questions answered through practical demonstrations using their own equipment. Several expressed interest in continuing this type of professional training on a regular basis.
For Living Sound, the success of this project went beyond improved sound quality.
It was about giving the church both a better-functioning system and the knowledge to use it confidently.

Helping Churches Get More from Their Existing Systems
Professional media team training is most effective when the system itself is properly configured.
At Living Sound Production, we combine detailed system inspection, measurement-based tuning, practical consulting, and hands-on volunteer training to help churches improve worship audio without automatically assuming new equipment is necessary.
Whether your church is experiencing recurring feedback, inconsistent sound, livestream audio challenges, or uncertainty about mixer operation, our team can help identify the root causes and provide practical solutions.
